Mark Hopkins serves as the Chairman of the Executive Committee for the National Space Society (NSS). Mark Hopkins has a BS in economics from the California Institute of Technology, an MA in economics from Harvard University, and is a former Rand Corporation economist. He has written numerous publications concerning space economics and is responsible for most of the early economic studies of space settlements, including the economic study in the NASA publication Space Settlements: A Design Study.  During the late sixties and early seventies, Hopkins studied social movements and realized the need for a movement that supported the space program. He later coined the term “Space Movement”, which is in widespread use today. His history of involvement has been so extensive that he has even been called the "Father of the Space Movement."  He became formally active in 1972, when he co-founded and later served as President of the Harvard-Radcliffe Committee for a Space Economy, dedicated to the goal of the large scale economic development of space. In 1975 Hopkins strongly encouraged the founding of the L-5 Society as a nucleus of a new social movement, and joined the L-5 Board of Directors at the Society’s first election. Hopkins first proposed the concept of the National Space Society (NSS) and was one of the two chief negotiatiors that created the merger of the L-5 Society and the National Space Institute to create the National Space Society in 1987. He has served continuously as an Officer and or Member of the Board of Directors of L-5 and NSS for thirty years (24 of those years as an Officer). Hopkins built and led the political efforts of L-5 and NSS for 18 years through 1997. He founded Spacecause and Spacepac and served as President of Spacecause for 10 years and Chairman of Spacepac for 16 years. Hopkins played a significant role in the successful effort to defeat the anti-private-enterprise Moon Treaty. Today Hopkins is particularly concerned with developing an optimal strategy for the Space Movement and the question "What is the best way to drive humanity into space?"

Salvatore T. “Tory” Bruno is the president and chief executive officer for United Launch Alliance (ULA). In this role, Bruno serves as the principal strategic leader of the organization and oversees all business management and operations.  Prior to joining ULA, he served as the vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Strategic and Missile Defense Systems. The business is a leading provider of ballistic missile and ballistic missile defense systems, supporting U.S. Department of Defense customers, as well as the U.K. Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence. Programs included the Navy’s Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM), the Air Force’s Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Reentry Systems, and the Missile Defense Agency’s Terminal High Area Altitude Defense (THAAD), Targets and Countermeasures and Common Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) Concept Definition. He also managed the corporation’s responsibilities in Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Management Limited, a joint venture that produces and safely maintains the U.K.’s nuclear weapons. He is a former member of the board of directors of Lockheed Martin U.K. Ltd.  Bruno joined Lockheed Martin in 1984. He previously served as vice president and general manager of FBM and ICBM, as vice president of the THAAD Missile, as vice president of Engineering, as chief engineer for Strategic Missile Programs, as program manager for FBM Rocket Propulsion and in engineering positions involving design and analysis for control systems of rockets and hypersonic reentry vehicles. He holds several patents. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the California Polytechnic State University, in San Luis Obispo, California, and has completed graduate courses and management programs at Harvard University, Santa Clara University, the Wye River Institute, San Jose State University and the Defense Acquisition University.  Bruno is a companion of the Naval Order of the United States, a member of the Navy League and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. He served on the National Blue Ribbon Panel for Bettering Engineering & Science Education and as Chairman of the Diversity Council of Lockheed Martin Space Systems.  He is the author of two books that explore the organization of the medieval Knights Templar from the perspective of modern business management: “Templar Organization: The Management of Warrior Monasticism” and “Templar Incorporated.” He is a recipient of the Order of Merit of the Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem.

Professor Hertzfeld has been a guest on many Space Show programs and will speak about launch economics, reusability, asteroid mining, and lots more.

Dr. Hertzfeld is an expert in the economic, legal, and policy issues of space and advanced technological development. Dr. Hertzfeld holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. from Washington University, and a Ph.D. degree in economics from Temple University. He also holds a J.D. degree from the George Washington University and is a member of the Bar in Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Dr. Hertzfeld joined the Space Policy Institute in 1992. His research projects have included studies on the privatization of the Space Shuttle, the economic benefits of NASA R&D expenditures, and the socioeconomic impacts of earth observation technologies. He teaches a course in Space Law and a course in microeconomics through the Economics Department at G. W.  Dr. Hertzfeld has served as a Senior Economist and Policy Analyst at both NASA and the National Science Foundation, and has been a consultant to many U.S. and international organizations, including a recent project on space applications with the OECD. He is the co-editor of Space Economics (AIAA 1992). Selected other publications include a study of the issues for privatizing the Space Shuttle (2000), an analysis of the value of information from better weather forecasts, an analysis of sovereignty and property rights published in the Journal of International Law (University of Chicago, 2005), and an economic analysis of the space launch vehicle industry (2005). Dr. Hertzfeld has also edited and prepared a new edition of the Study Guide and Case Book for Managerial Economics (Sixth Edition, W.W. Norton & Co.).

4. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016: 12-1:30 PM PST (3-4:30 PM EST, 2-3:30 5PM CST): The Great Debate on cislunar space development, technology and economics featuring DR. DOUG PLATA and JOHN STRICKLAND.

Dr. Plata is a physician and public health specialist in Loma Linda, CA.  His undergraduate degree was in biophysics and he went on to complete his MD and MPH with specialty training in Family and Preventive Medicine.  His involvement in space has emerged only in the last three years.  His primary interest in space is the development of a cis-lunar transportation infrastructure based upon lunar polar ice for propellant.  A description of his concept can be found at CisLunarOne.com.  He established the on-line Lunar COTS petition which has attracted signatures of individuals from NASA, industry, academia, advocacy organizations, and space journalists.

Mr. Strickland has been an active member of space- and science-related organizations since 1961, when he joined the American Rocket Society as a student member. In 1975 he joined both the National Space Institute and the L-5 Society — the "parents" of NSS. He was the founder of the Austin Space Frontier Society and has served as its chairman from 1981 to the present. He created the Robert A. Heinlein Memorial Award for the National Space Society in 1988, (shortly after the author's death), and has managed the award from its inception. He also works on the design and production of the Von Braun Award.   In 1988, Mr. Strickland was a founder of the NSS Chapters Assembly, and served as one of its officers. His involvement with both Austin environmental groups and CSICOP — a national group working for better science coverage and less pseudo-science in the mass media — has given him a unique perspective on such controversial issues as energy vs. environment.  Since 1976, Mr. Strickland has produced articles for "The Humanist," "L5 News," "Ad Astra," "Space News," "Solar Power," and other local and regional publications. His articles have focused primarily on national space policy, access to space and space solar power. His creation of a slide show and talk in 1990, explaining and promoting space solar power to non-technical audiences, led to the publication of his first technical SPS article in 1995, and a second in 1996.  He served as the director for science and space programming (about 50 events) at the 1997 LoneStarCon World Science Fiction Convention. He contributed a comprehensive chapter on energy systems in the book, "Solar Power Satellites - a Space Energy System for Earth," edited by Dr. Peter Glaser et al., and published by Wiley-Praxis in 1998. He since has contributed several additional technical papers and presentations to the Mars Society's 1999 convention, the Wireless Power Transmission Conference of 2001 and the World Space Congress in 2002. He is a director of the Sunsat Energy Council. He has also been a moderate Delegate to the Texas State Republican Convention in 2000, 2002, and 2004, where he facilitated the inclusion of pro-space items into the state platform.  Mr. Strickland lived for 30 years in western New York before moving to Austin, Texas in 1976. He received a B. A. in Anthropology with a minor in Biology from SUNY at Buffalo in 1967, and a second B.A. in Computer Science from St. Edwards University in Austin in 1986. He also earned graduate credits in both Anthropology and Biology. He has been a professional programmer and analyst since 1980, and has been employed as a Senior Programmer/Analyst for the State of Texas in Austin since July, 1989.
