The Space Foundation Conference

Ron Small has a B.S. in mathematics from the US Air Force Academy (same year as Tom Jones, 1977), and an M.S. in computer engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. After he graduated from the Academy, he was a student pilot at Williams Air Force Base, near Phoenix, where he flew the T-37 and T-38 jets. Upon graduation from pilot training, Ron was a copilot then aircraft commander in the KC-135A, stationed near Wichita, from where he flew worldwide air refueling missions. His next assignment was to earn his master’s degree and then conduct cockpit integration research at Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton. After that, he left active duty and began research and development (R&D) of pilot aiding technologies in private industry, first at Search Technology in Atlanta and now at Alion Science and Technology Corp. in Boulder where he is a Principal Systems Engineer. Ron has published 60 articles, book chapters and technical reports about aerospace human-systems integration.

Broadcast 1113 (Special Edition)

Guests: Dr. Tom Jones, Dr. Charles Oman, Ron Small. Topics: Spatial disorientation, space motion sickness, vertigo, solutions. Our guests today, Dr. Jones, Dr. Oman, and Ron Small, are involved in a research project with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) to assist pilots in real-time to overcome spatial disorientation for aviation and space. We also talked about motion sickness, particularly space motion sickness, and ways to combat it. Physiology plays a big part in both disorientation and motion sickness, so you will want to hear what our guests had to say.
