The Space Foundation Conference

John Powell is the President and Founder of JP Aerospace. John Powell and the JPA team has been giving NASA competition. His work has included a wide variety of development projects and flight systems including Orbital transfer vehicles, micro-satellites, rockets, balloon based rocket launch systems and high altitude airships. JP has over 170 flight missions under his belt. The JPA team has made the edge of space their playground. Mr. Powell is both a pilot and submarine builder and lives in Placerville, California.

In our first segment, John told us that JP Aerospace celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2009. He told us how he got started, what made the year 2009 special with the Discovery and National Geographic TV programs, and the Toshiba commercial with the chair going up on the balloon to promote big screen TVs.

John discussed airships to space, from the basic airships to the more advanced airships that he is planning on building in the future. We discussed altitude, density, shockwaves, and much more. He talked about upcoming launches and more PongSat opportunities.

John discussed the plans for JPAerospace, its launch platforms, balloon launches, the technology and science supporting their business plan and operations. John also discussed the need for his company to comply with ITARS, what it is like working with the FAA AST on regulatory issues, and the State Dept. regarding ITARS. We also discussed his coming project with Michael Laine regarding space elevator technology, his thoughts on space policy, the OSP, NASA, and other relevant topics.
