Dr. Stein L. Cass, Jr. is currently the Systems Engineering Lead at Surrey Satellite Technology – US. He is the technical lead for new business and existing contracts. He was previously at Ball Aerospace from 1998-2009, with prior project experience as Deputy Program Manager for the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite built as part of the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS), as well as chief engineer, project/systems engineering, and launch vehicle support for various NASA and DoD programs (QuikSCAT, ICESat, CloudSat, Deep Impact, and RAMOS). He was also a Functional Group Lead in the Mission Systems Engineering department, and the Subject Matter Expert for Risk Management across all of Ball Aerospace. Dr. Cass started his career in the US Air Force in satellite operations at Schriever AFB and launch base operations at Cape Canaveral AFS from 1990-1996. He was a Distinguished Graduate of Squadron Officer’s School in 1995, and maintains a commission in the USAF Reserves. He previously worked for Lockheed Martin, performing launch services systems engineering, integration and test, and launch operations, from 1996-1998. He was the Boulder Area Director for the Front Range chapter of INCOSE in 2004-5, and is currently a member of INCOSE, INFORMS, National Defense Industry Association, and the Society for Risk Analysis. He received his BS degree from the University of Miami in 1990, MS degree from the University of North Dakota in 1992, and MSEE (1995) and Management PhD (2000) degrees from Colorado Technical University. Dr. Cass has served as associate professor in systems engineering at Colorado Technical University and the University of Colorado-Denver. He has been married to his wife, Therese, for 17 years, and has three children. His hobbies include golf, travel, and brew-mastering beer.
