Broadcast 3854 Marshall Martin
Guest: Marshall Martin: Topics: Space farming, food in space, artificial gravity, nutrition, needed scientific experiments, ISS as a model.
Marshall Martin has extensive experience supporting management for multiple high tech projects. Strengths are working with engineers and support departments to ensure that the needed tasks are completed correctly and on time. Experienced at hard logic programming requiring rigor and great detail to prove a concept or get the job done. His education includes an MBA, an MS in computer science, and his BS in Mathematics, Physics, and Business. COMPUTER SYSTEMS: SUN, Windows PCs, Linux PCs PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES: MS office, MS Project, SEVERAL UNIX scripts, Windows, Code Composer Studio (C6x C/C++, assembly), C/C++, UNIX, Visual Basic, several specialty languages used in VHDL microprocessor development. Consulting: Produced an economic model for a 431 acre-ft. lake, and irrigation system. Did a full business analysis of several complimentary side businesses. Work in progress. Wrote five books on space: Moon-Inc is a lunar development plan (3 are sidebar books). Texas Instruments, Dallas, Texas (TI) Semiconductor Division 1994 – 2003 Design Engineer/Project Administrator. In charge of equipment leasing/lease returns, purchase of new equipment, quarterly capital requests, account setups, office builds/moves/assignments, storage of equipment, MS Project Pert charts, managed small projects for six cost center (project) managers. Interfaced with several hundred engineers, vendors, management departments and upper management personnel. * Spreadsheet analysis of Solaris vs. Linux workstations, justifying a switch to Linux. * ISO 9002 compliance and inspection process * Tailored and supported DDTS Problem reporting system for the projects. * Used IG (a netlist examiner (Perl5)) to parse and check VHDL for logic errors * Recognized twice with bonuses for outstanding performance. AV7000 Project: (1996) Wrote the introductory training book for the Digital TV processors AV7100 and AV7110. Vivid Project: (95-96) Major contributor to the Vivid Design Verification Plan. Wrote 4 papers for systems design on projected Vivid applications (encryption, voice recognition, speaker identification, and network processing) which were folded into the C6x projects. Amazon Project: (94-95) Supervisor of the x86 reference models ( PCsim & Jbarc). Recruited and trained new employees. Proposed, designed, programmed, and debugged tests to guarantee Intel compatibility for the Pentium clone processor, such as, a test program to define the undefined EFLAGS values, verify the undefined EFLAGS, targeted bus tests, cache tests, and other miscellaneous microprocessor verification tests (such as, SMI & NMI processing, core-clock multiplier, MSR settings, shutdown, simultaneous interrupts, task switching exceptions analysis, ...). Tad Technical (contractor @ TI, Austin, Texas - Telecom Group) 1993 - 1994 Setup and debugged a suite of modem tests for the TI1500. Designed, and developed a factory test system to Bit Error Rate Test (BERT) the T-1 communication lines for the TI1500 Voice Recognition Computer System. The system tests TI's C30/40 DSP & Mitel T1 telecommunication chip set. 6129 lines of C++ code, written on a SUN, ported to a TI1500 ATT UNIX system. Produced and successfully demonstrated a Voice Recognition Test system to showcase the capabilities of TI voice recognition systems to Bellcore. Test required recognition of thousands of utterances in sequence. The program was written in C++; 800 lines of code; completed in 3 months. E-Systems 1988 - 93 Responsible for Software Configuration Management (SCM), Communications, Cost Estimation, and Proposal writing for defense projects. SCM Supervisor, supported Hardware Configuration Management (HCM), and did special projects. Wrote a C++ program to check for Configuration Management rule violations to inspect the NET.CFG file for comments and logical parameters. Preformed SCM on the fiber optic FDDI bridge (ACCII) and setup files using SCCS on a Gould UNIX platform. The following protocols were used on the network: TCP/IP (SUN workstations), SPX/IPX (PCs), and Local Talk (Macintosh). Trained several groups to use Ethernet communications to access other computers via the LAN system. Using MS Excel, wrote a project required “As Designed/As Built” management system in 3 months and supported it for 8 months as a part time task. Information Technology group management wanted 2 man years labor and one year to delivery. Assumed other projects such as, management analysis and reports, proposals (mostly SCM cost estimation), presentations, and general trouble shooting. 1988-90, Software Training Specialist teaching classes in Ada, C, C+, C++ , FORTRAN, UNIX, DOD-STD-2167A, VAX/VMS System services. Produced lectures on varying standards like IEEE 1003p (Posix), IEEE 802.x (Ethernet), and ISO OSI 7 layer communications protocol. Wrote the following training manuals: UNIX Software Development Tools, Object Oriented Programming, VAX/VMS Utilities and Commands, VAX/VMS Debug, Configuration Management, Software Cost Estimation, Microsoft Excel Macro TELOS Corporation Lawton, OK 1983 - 1988 Software Engineer Engineering in support of the Center for Life Cycle Software Engineering (CLCSE), Fire Support Systems (FSS), 1983 to November 1985. 1985 to 1988, provided AFATDS technical Support to FSS in the areas of Communications Support (LAN), Communications Interface (modems), and Sim/Stim (Software Test Systems) in relation to MIL-STD 483, 490, 2167. Took part in writing proposals. Supervised as many as 6 workers. Test Software System (TSS) - an automated software test system for the AN/GYK-29 and AN/GYK-12. Analyzed the system, designed three packages, and wrote the last phase of the language processor and the time critical communications driver program. Communications involved Hamming codes, Time-Dispersion, and an early design packet switching system. Converted manual test procedures to the "Scenario" language. Did first execution and problem analysis to verify a baseline of test outputs which agreed with the output of the manual procedures. All following "Scenario" test output was compared against the standard baseline. Mapped the relationship between the government FATDS requirements and the "Scenario" programs. Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data Systems (AFATDS). Provided communications expertise for IEEE 802.5 (Ethernet Token Ring) standards. Programmed on the Session level of the OSI model to provide mailbox communications between AFATDS nodes. Became a consultant to the government AFATDS office on Token Ring communications requirements and the automated test system "Sim/Stim". SoftTask - Artillery task analysis and definition system. Converted the program from an older style of FORTRAN to VAX FORTRAN 77 and wrote enhancement packages. Tape Duplication Device (TDD). Rewrote from scratch the program controlling the device. Wrote a rough translator of FORTRAN 77 to Ada. A demonstration of TELOS's interest and support of Ada.

Marshall Martin was the guest for this special Space Show program. Marshall is a faithful Space Show listener, an unaffiliated space advocate, and a listener that asks exceptionally good questions to a wide variety of Space Show guests. This interview started out by asking Marshall about his interest in space and how he comes up with so many unusually high quality questions for Space Show guests on a wide variety of topics. As you will hear when listening to the program, Marshall applies some engineering rules to his question process.
