Bernard H. Foing is the Chief scientist and Senior Research Coordinator, at ESA Space Science Department. Executive Director, International Lunar Exploration Working Group (ILEWG). PhD in Astrophysics and Space Techniques with a sounding rocket experiment (France CNRS and US New Mexico, Boulder, Harvard). ENSET and Agrégé Professor of Physics, he joined CNRS and worked 3 years with ESO and French embassy in Chile. He has worked at ESA as visiting scientist, staff scientist, Head of Research Division, Chief scientist and Senior Research Coordinator, in ESA Space Science Department. Co-investigator of space missions instruments such as TRC, SOHO, XMM, Mars-Express, COROT, BIOPAN, Expose/ISS, ExoMars. He is the Project scientist, father of SMART-1 first European mission to the Moon, from conception in 1996 to lunar final impact in 2006. He has led studies of lunar orbiters and landers, and technology developments. With ILEWG, he has been promoting international collaborative projects, the preparation for a global robotic village, and a human base. He is a corresponding member of International Academy of Astronautics, Distinguished Research Professor at Florida Tech. Space scientist in lunar and planetary exploration, astrophysics, he authored or co-authored more than 450 papers, and edited 16 books.

Guest: Dr. Bernard Foing. Topics: ESA, SMART-1, lunar development, lunar science, European space community and interest. Dr. Bernard Foing returned to The Space Show to discuss the ESA SMART-1 mission which he was the father of. In the first segment, Dr. Foing shared with us the history leading up to SMART-1, the mission design, and the science it conducted around and on the Moon. He talked about the need drive SMART-1 to the Moon given its ion engines, the 18 month trip to the Moon, and the records that SMART-1 established.

Dr. Bernard Foing, the Chief Scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA) Research and Scientific Support Department, was the Space Show guest for this program. Dr. Foing described in detail the his work at ESA, including the SMART-1 Mission, Mars missions, lunar research, Mars and other planetology and astrobiology. We discussed European attitudes with space exploration and development, commercial space development including lunar settlements and commerce, and the Chinese space program.
