Guest: Dallas Bienhoff. Topics On orbit fuel/propellant depots. Dallas Bienhoff was the guest for this Space Show program to discuss orbital fuel/propellant depots. In our first segment, Dallas started out by describing the concept behind the orbital propellant depot which he said was similar in concept to a gas station for cars except it was in orbit. Dallas suggested that by using depots we could increase payload capabilities between 2-3 times were we refueling in LEO today. He also summarized the history of depots which goes back to the early days of the space age.

Guest: Dallas Bienhoff. Dallas Bienhoff returned to The Space Show in order to update us and provide new information on the possibility of orbital fuel depots. This important discussion takes up the first segment of the show because such a depot would be applicable for returning to the Moon, visiting a NEO, going to Mars, or focusing on Earth imaging if that is the direction the next administration prefers when it takes office in January 2009.

Dallas Bienhoff was the special guest for this Space Show program. Our discussion with Dallas focused on building an on orbit propellant depot to enhance and facilitate the VSE program with NASA and to also serve the developing private sector space community. Dallas took us through all phases of building a propellant depot and we discussed the four most significant hurdles: the cost of space access, zero g fuel transfer, long term cryogenic storage, and the autonomous rendezvous and docking necessary for the depot.
