Dr. Ted Bateman is a researcher with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute: Musculoskeletal Alterations Team Principal Investigator: Space Radiation and Bone Loss: Lunar Outpost Mission-Critical Scenarios and Countermeasures Clemson University: Director, Osteoporosis Mechanics Lab Associate Professor, Department of Bio Engineering. Dr. Ted Bateman has more than 15 years in engineering and 15 years in Bioengineering/Biomedical Engineering, with seven of those years at Clemson University. His current research focus is on the effect of radiation exposure on bone, including space radiation. In addition, to his NSBRI work, Bateman is conducting NASA-funded research. His other research studies involve disuse osteoporosis and molecular therapies, SCI/Nerve damage induced bone loss, biomineralization/biomechanics, and spaceflight pre-clinical disease models. Prior to joining Clemson, Bateman was an assistant professor at Colorado State University and a research associate at the BioServe Space Technologies Center at the University of Colorado. Our guests for today, Dr. Ted Bateman and Dr. Jeff Willey, both of Clemson University, are involved in bone loss studies at the radiation levels astronauts will probably encounter on long duration spaceflights, space settlement, and possibly even on a flight to Mars. Their research flows from a project funded by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) in Houston.
