The Space Foundation Conference

Bob Dickman is the Executive Director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a professional membership technical society with more than 35,000 members in 79 countries. AIAA organizes the Space Exploration conference as well as many other technical conferences for the aerospace industry. His career spans the space business from basic research in particle physics to command of the 45 Space Wing and Director of the Eastern Range at Cape Canaveral, FL. He served as the Air Force’s Director of Space programs, the Department of Defense Space Architect and the senior military officer at the National Reconnaissance Office. He retired from active duty in 2000 as a major general. From 2002 to 2005, he was Deputy for Military Space in the office of the Undersecretary of the Air Force. He was the National Space Club’s Astronautics Engineer of the Year, was selected as one of Space News ‘“100 Who Made a Difference” and is a member of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and the National Reconnaissance Office’s Technical Advisory Group.

This AIAA Space 2007 Conference discussion program featured Mike Lounge of Boeing, Dr. Randii Wessen of JPL, Col. Richard White Jr. of SMC Los Angeles Air Force Base, CA, and Bob Dickman, AIAA Executive Director. The purpose of our program was to let listeners know about the content, the variety, and the importance of this upcoming conference in Long Beach, CA from Sept. 18-20, 2007. Each guest spoke about an area of special interest featured at the conference, in addition to pointing NewSpace speakers, panels, and keynote speakers representing various parts of the space community.

Paul Eckert, Robert Dickman and Carl Walz were the guests for this special program to discuss making the VSE a long-term reality as well as the coming AIAA Dec. 4-6 2nd Space Exploration Conference which will be held in Houston. We started the panel discussion with Bob Dickman explaining why the AIAA has this conference and its role in helping to establish the VSE as a long-term reality for the nation. Paul Eckert of Boeing was next and he went through the conference agenda with us, focusing on the commercial panel and commercial opportunities stemming from the VSE.
