John Batchelor and I welcomed back Dr. Haym Benaroya for a two part Hotel Mars program focusing on the Russia-China plan for a joint lunar settlement on the lunar surface, possibly in orbit or both. We discussed Chinese and Russian TRLs and capability compared to that of the US. We talked about people in the US fearing China in space and why. Dr. Benaroya talked about both China and Russia having concern about our Artemis plan for returning to the Moon along with the increasingly internationally accepted Artemis Accords. Dr. Benaroya stressed robotics rather than human workers due to radiation, microgravity issues, even the possibility of being hit by micrometeorite particles if on the lunar surface. Dr. Benaroya, in response to one of my questions talked about the increased student and professor interest in lunar surface habitat engineering academic classes. In the second part of the program, we talked about a future lunar settlement around a hundred years from now. When asked if a Chinese, Russian, or US-western settlements could interact with one another, Dr. Benaroya said that planning needed to start now because there were no standards in place to enable such interaction. Before ending, our guest talked about the long term need for advanced robotics and AI because the risk for humans working outside was very high. He predicted robots and AI will be dominant, not human labor.
