John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Jackie Faherty to the program to discuss her Nature article, along with co-author Dr. Lisa Kaltenegger, "Past, present and future stars that can see Earth as a transiting exoplanet."  You can read multiple summaries of this paper on line by searching for the title.  As a reference, here is a story about this work on The Verge:  www.theverge.com/2021/6/23/22545453/alien-planets-view-earth-astronomers-journal-nature.  Our guest, Dr. Jackie Faherty first talked about star systems in the past and in the future being able to look upon Earth and detecting it via the same transiting system we use to detect exoplanets.  Our guest talked about their capabilities to spot techno and bio signatures in Earth's atmosphere, plus our guest showed just how many close in star systems would have been in a position in the past to observe Earth and how many in the future will be able to observer Earth.  In the second part of today's Hotel Mars program, we talked about the ESA GAIA orbiting observatory and our guest having found a star in the GAIA database.  Our guest certainly lavished scientific praise on GAIA so I am sure we will hear more about it on future Space Show programs. Before ending, our guest pointed us to the website, https://www.openspaceproject.com, which is an "open source interactive data visualization software designed to visualize the entire known universe and portray our ongoing efforts to investigate the cosmos."

Please post your comments/questions for this discussion on our blog for this show.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Faherty through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. D r. Faherty can also be reached through her faculty page at the American Museum of  Natural History.
