John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Hannah Kaplan to the program to discuss her new paper regarding organics on the dwarf planet Ceres, possibly in a larger quantity than originally thought.  During the first segment of this double segment Hotel Mars program,

Dr. Kaplan introduced us to her work, talked about the main detection instrument onboard the Dawn spacecraft, the VIR instrument.  Our guest was asked about the organics, also about Tholins which are a commonly found special type of organics (not found on Earth) and more.  We talked about the origin of organics, life detection and what this may mean for Ceres, especially in terms of answering the question as to where the organics came from.  She told us about the two theories which suggest either an extraterrestrial impactor or from within the interior of Ceres.  Don't miss why she said one theory might be a better choice than the other but the question was certainly an open question.

In the second part of the discussion, we talked about Ceres energy and liquid water plus the bright spots and volcanic ice.  Dr. Kaplan had much to say about these Ceres characteristics but was not so keen on these being related to the organics and the specific location where the organics have been found in the northern part of Ceres at the Emutet crater.  Also in this segment we discussed the importance of sample return missions, especially one for Ceres.  From the sample return mission, we jumped to Osiris Rex and noted Kaplan is on the mission team.  In addition, we talked about the JAXA mission Hayabusa 2.  Note that Osiris Rex and the JAXA mission were planned as sample return missions.

You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Kaplan through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.  Dr. Kaplan can also be reached through her SWRI page.
