Richard C. Hoagland was the special guest for this two hour Space Show program. We began our discussion with a look at the VSE, its hardware for returning to the Moon, the time table for doing so, and the COTS program. Richard discussed some of the challenges presented by the VSE and suggested that some of what NASA was doing did not make much sense. He talked about an alternative hardware and launch methodology called "Direct" which he summarized for us as well as letting us know who developed the concept and that it could likely save NASA upwards of $35 billion and ten years, yet despite having people behind it with quality credentials for designing such a program, there is no interest in it or other alternative suggestions by NASA. Richard suggested that maybe the public VSE program is designed to be less than successful for not so obvious or transparent reasons. Richard made the case for their being artifacts on the Moon as discovered by Apollo and that is the real reason for going. The time is right now because other countries have caught up with the US with technology to get to the Moon, i.e. China and India and that the US, as evidenced by public statements and documents over the recent years, is committed to controlling all aspects of space and this includes the Moon. Thus, the real effort is to get back to the Moon out of the public view to control what is on the Moon. He suggests the public program we all know as the VSE is a diversion. During the program and with listener questions and comments, Richard said that he had photographic evidence which he is releasing at two of his upcoming talks in Los Angeles, Feb. 9-13. He said Space Show listeners would likely be upset and angry at what he was saying but he challenged listeners to come see his evidence in LA and to be a peer reviewer of what he will be showing. He said listeners could get the same photos directly from the NASA sites that make Apollo pictures available to the public to see for themselves after they see what he shows in Los Angeles. Toward the very end of the show, I asked Richard about our collection of Moon Rockets and he updated us with some very interesting facts about how we are tracking down missing moon rocks once given to countries with dictator leadership. This was an easy story to find using Google during the remaining minutes of the show and if you are not familiar with it, pay attention to the search terms Richard provides in this part of the discussion and check it out yourself.
