We welcomed back Gary Hudson for this one segment one hour program to discuss The Space Studies Institute (SSI) and their Exotic Propulsion Workshop held last month in Colorado. As we started our 60 minute discussion, Gary first provided us with a short history of SSI. From there, he explained the SSI interest in exotic propulsion and we talked about the Exotic Propulsion Workshop held in Colorado last month. I asked if this workshop was a type of follow on program to the famous STAIF Conferences that were held at the University of New Mexico several years ago for breakthrough propulsion ideas. Gary's simple answer was yes but as he explained, there were and are specific differences between the two. Gary also said that SSI hoped to continue with the Exotic Propulsion Workshop next year or possibly every other year so stay tuned.
As for workshop topics, Gary discussed Dr. Woodward's work on Mach Thrusters and his presentation at the workshop. He also mentioned his one meeting with Sir Arthur Clarke and what Sir Arthur told him about scientists giving him a straight answer related to inertia. Gary went on to say that Dr. Woodward was such a scientist. Gary then talked about Woodward's work and possible relations to EmDrive.
I asked Gary about the Eagleworks Lab presentation on EmDrive. As he explained to us, the information provided at the workshop is under boycott until the Eagleworks reviewed paper is published. The paper should be published in December, then SSI will make the audio of the workshop available on their website and that will be followed by a book of the presentation papers early next year. Gary will keep us posted on both the audio and paper release dates.
Listener John Hunt called from Ft. Worth to talk about scaling up the Woodward effect with multiple or cluster arrays rather than a very large unit. Gary confirmed this approach and also talked about the need for cooling. Later another John, John from Freemont called to talk about the Exotic Propulsion SSI Initiative, Woodward and other's research.
As we were nearing the close of our one hour discussion, Joe asked why Musk did not pursue advanced or exotic propulsion rather than just using very large chemical rockets. Don't miss what Gary had to say about this. Another listener then asked Gary for his thoughts on the Musk plan for Mars. Gary thought the very large ITS rocket was "insane." Don't miss his explanation for what he said plus his comments on the probable ITS acoustic signature.
Gary then mentioned space settlement on a celestial body with a gravity well. He was not that supportive of this approach. Instead, he preferred 1 g orbiting stations such as proposed by Dr. Gerard K. O’Neill. In addition, he had some comments about going to the Martian moons so don't miss all of what he said on these topics.
