This will help me bring better programming to the audience. Welcome to our first May 2016 Open Lines program. During the first segment of our very long 2 hour 26 minute program, I suggested 13 topics for discussion. While we did manage to discuss most of them, the most popular included remembering Charles Pooley and talking about the EM drive. Many listeners called in during both segments to remember Charles Pooley. Also in the first segment, the EM drive came up for discussion with John in Ft. Worth. He had much to say about the potential of the EM drive, plus he commented on why many traditional scientists say nothing is there, that any results are only on the margin. I cited a recent article at www.nasaspaceflight.com/2015/04/evaluating-nasas-futuristic-em-drive. In the second segment, we started off with Steve Nixon talking about Charles but it soon evolved to a discussion about space solar power and the upcoming ISDC conference. In touting SSP, Steve referenced the work by Keith Henson and others, the SunSat Competition, and more. I was extremely skeptical of his SSP claims which depended on Skylon working and significantly lowering the cost of space access. That claim made me even more skeptical. I told him Keith was welcome back on the show to discuss his latest SSP analysis, assumptions, and claims so we will see if Keith wants to return after ISDC which is later this month in Toronto. I recall earlier comments & analysis by Keith which were certainly in the skeptical range from my perspective. I do hope he returns as we can have a good discussion with lots of listener participation. Based on listener emails and some phone comments, I was not the only one skeptical about the latest SSP claims. BJohn emailed us to say that Pooley's idead were coming into their time, plus he commented on EM drive. Dr. Dwayne Day called in and somehow we got to talking about high price art auctions and the Picasso that just sold at Christies for $179 million +. I also referenced the Christies auction last year of James Bond movie items including the original Moonraker Space Shuttle model which sold for $89,000+. Dwayne then addressed his reason for calling which was a recent Jeff Foust article reporting on the status of the NTSB investigation and report regarding both the Virgin Galactic and Orbital Antares accidents. Dwayne's comments on the investigation were interesting so make sure you hear them. We talked more on the EM drive, then Tim called to refute SSP as well as terrestrial solar power. He also said the EM drive could be used as a doomsday weapon! Dr. Doug called and said kind things about Charles, then he wanted to talk about home grown space experiments. He briefly mentioned one he did regarding eating dried foods. He will have more to say about this on the next Open Lines show at the end of this month.
