John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Peter Schultz of Brown University to discuss his team's finding about the very large comet that exploded over parts of the Chilean Atacama Desert around 12,000 years creating very strange glass rocks. This was a two part Hotel Mars segment talking about the origin of this research which dates to the NASA Stardust mission. Timelines were discussed, descriptions of the area and possible civilization at that time were discussed, both before and after the probable comet event. Dr. Schultz also expressed concern about collectors damaging the research sites as they go for the glass rocks. He called for protection of the sites by the Chilean government and others given some of the sites were are on private property. Dr. Schultz described the detailed research going into the project, how they know it was a comet and not an asteroid, why they know it was an airburst and more. He set the stage for their return for important and essential additional research which he described on this program. Be sure to listen to both segments of this program.
