John Batchelor and I welcomed back Alan Boyle to Hotel Mars to provide us with updates on a new commercial super sonic transport (SST). The SST came back in the news with a tentative purchase of 15 SST planes from Boom Technology in 2029 if the Boom Overture jet met safety, operational, economic and sustainable standards. Alan talked about the SST being cramped and uncomfortable and later suggested it might be more beneficial for working travelers to fly in more comfort to get work done than to fly at high speeds in cramped conditions. The impact of the shutting down of operations for the SST company leading the way, Aerion, was discussed and were meeting low boom technology requirements, flying supersonic over land, the economics and the environmental issues surrounding such flight. We spent a few minutes talking about the SST fuel consumption which will be high in light of the high cost of likely SST fuel. Toward the end of the segment, Alan was asked about the market and demand for super sonic travel. Don't miss what Alan said about that. John's final question was about an SST flying today and being in the black. Alan said that such an SST flying today would not be in the black but the goal was for that to happen toward the end of this decade. By the way, Boom says it will fly at about 1.7 mach.
