We welcomed student contest winners Ben Puckett, Shivani Patel, and Ishaan Mishra to discuss their winning essay for the Limitless Space Institute Contest (https://www.limitlessspace.org/student-papers). This contest was put forth by Dr. Harold "Sonny" White and the Limitless Space Institute (https://www.limitlessspace.org). Each student winner and guest on our show for today has their winning paper on our blog so I encourage you to read them and comment on them. We spent a good part of our program time of 66 minutes with each student going through their essay, talking about it and telling us about the inspiration behind it. In addition, I asked each student what both their essay and winning meant to each of them in developing and writing the essay. Each student opened up and talked about what space development meant for each of them now, for the future and for all of humanity. I urge you to listen to each student talk about his or her paper but I strongly suggest you first read their papers.
After we concluded talking about the papers, we talked to each student about going to space, wanting to be a space tourist, going to Mars to live or come back, plus I inquired about the significance and importance of space with their friends. I found it most interesting to hear what Ishaan had to say given the unique role space plays in India. We received several listener emails and a call from Ft. Worth John. Note what each student wanted to do for a space career, what they wanted to work on and where they see themselves five years down the road. A reoccurring theme for all three of our guests was the importance of space exploration and development for the future and for humanity.
In her bio, Shivani mentioned a few unusual things so later in the program I asked her about the butterfly-inspired Micro Air Vehicle research, beekeeping, stress-baking and her playing the French Horn. I found her commentary on her hobbies to be interesting and fun. Don't miss what she said on these items. Ishaan, being in Bangalore, India and having lived across from ISRO HQ, received questions about wanting to work at ISRO, the space awareness for people in general in India, and what the Indian space program meant for the people of India. I found it interesting that he was also musically inclined and played the sax. As for our guest Ben, we zeroed in on his interest to design and build spacecraft, including human spaceflight vehicles.
As we were getting close to the end of our discussion, I asked each student for their ideas on the new commercial industry as compared to a government space program such as one by NASA, ESA or even the ISRO. Listen to what they said about both. Are you surprised by any of their responses to my question?
