We welcomed Frank White back to the show for a one segment 65 minute update on The Overview Effect with new projects, NASA coverage, and an upcoming free March 19 webinar titled "Why Every Human Should Leave The Planet (see https://tinyurl.com/brodeurwebinar. Frank started the discussion with a short history review of the start of The Overview Effect concept stemming from the 1980's. He also told us about a new NASA TV Channel Series, "Down to Earth." Here is the URL for Down To Earth: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L6eqgnmlPo. As part of the partial history review, Frank discussed new astronaut interviews, great NASA cooperation today as compared to the early period, working with the ISS Communication Team and more.
Frank was asked for some of the newer astronaut interview commentary on The Overview Effect, even if they had heard of The Overview Effect. An overriding theme was that it was hard to explain and hard to share. Another theme was that the astronauts were taking the risk and going into space to share and not just for themselves. Don't miss all of what Frank said on this topic. Another theme mentioned by Frank was the idea of going to space for common humanity.
Frank was asked about interviews with cosmonauts, the international astronaut community, and the private sector or commercial astronauts. He said he has reached out to all of these communities and shared some of the interview experience with us on this program. This part of the discussion offered Frank the chance to talk to us about astronaut values and how they seem to have possibly changed over the years. Listener Ben in Denver asked Frank if he had ever interviewed the NASA CAPCOMS to see if they picked up on The Overview Effect. He said no but had much to say about the idea so don't miss his commentary on the subject. He also talked about his interview with commercial astronaut Richard Garriott which he said will be in the new upcoming 4th edition of his book. Another short topic that came up deal with a Moon and Mars Overview Effect. Seattle listener Cathy brought that up in her email question.
The next segment of our discussion focused on the March 19, 2020 free webinar, "Why Every Human Should Leave The Planet./" This roughly 40 minute webinar requires your advance registration. It will be a discussion on the subject with Frank and retired NASA Astronaut, Michael Lope-Alegria. Note that Michael was a guest on The Space Show on Sept. 4, 2009 in a panel discussion with Dr. Pat Hynes for the Personal Spaceflight Symposium. The webinar is scheduled for noon EST on Thursday, March 19. Frank said we could ask questions via email.
Frank moved us to the next topic, virtual reality and The Overview Effect. Lots of progress has been made on this front and he described available VR programming now though to experience The Overview Effect, you need the headgear. He mentioned SpaceVR which has had demos at some recent NewSpace conferences. Tony called to ask about movies for The Overview Effect plus he mentioned the early work by Stan Rosen in this area before Frank created the Overview Effect terminology. Stan has been a guest on the show many times plus he was an early participant in the SYNCON's with Barbara Marx Hubbard.
Frank talked about the upcoming 4th edition of his classic, "The Overview Effect." He indicated the book would probably be available next year. He was then asked how he actually came up with the idea of something like The Overview Effect. Don't miss his story. I asked him what might have happened if he had not been on that flight which provided the opportunity for him to develop an overview effect idea. In addition, Frank said he was more interested in settlement and O'Neilian colonies. Again, listen to all of what he said. Share your comments with us on our blog.
