John Batchelor and I welcomed back Anatoly Zak off the RussianSpaceWeb.com news service for the Russian space industry. During our discussion, John and I talked with Anatoly about the Roskosmos plans for their four stage super-heavy rocket, Yenisei, nicknamed "dreadnought." Anatoly described the rocket, went into detail about their use of hydrogen fuel and the new hydrogen engines, the flight service controls needed for this type of rocket and deep space human spaceflight missions including BLEO, the Moon, even Mars. That said, we learned that the PTK crew vehicle would not go to the Moon so the Russians need to build a lander. Also, after proving it with a few government missions, they need to sell services with it for economic reasons to other potential users so listen to the market and economic part of our discussion. Anatoly had more to say about the Russian deep space and humans space plans plus some of the Russian rocket history that has led them to designing and wanting to build this large rocket with a ten year timeline. The timeline of course is subject to many considerations and will likely change over time. Anatoly was also asked if he thought this was about Russian competition with SpaceX, SLS, Blue Origin and western rocket companies. He suggested that was the case.
