We welcomed back Dwight Steven-Boniecki to discuss his latest book, "Live TV From Orbit" which focuses on how television was transmitted from Skylab, ASTP, Shuttle and in general from orbital space. In segment one of our 1 hour 31 minute program, Dwight provided us with an overview of the book which is a sequent to his earlier best-seller, "Live TV From The Moon." Remember, if you buy Dwight's books through the One Giant Leap Amazon portal (instructions are above, on the blog, and on TSS website as well as the OGLF website), Amazon makes a contribution to The Space Show/OGLF. Among our discussion topics was Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Dwight took us through the challenges of bring us live TV from these orbiting missions. He went over the challenges and at one point, he said that both were much harder than doing TV from the Moon. Dwight talked about the declining public interest in these missions, camera and technical modifications, and what was involved in bringing us color TV from orbit. He received questions about Skylab's return to Earth, the differences between NASA and the Soviet space agency and program, especially over being open & transparent. In the second segment, we talked about the ground stations needed to receive the TV signal, the role of West Germany, the video cameras, and the use of pre-recorded video for broadcast back to Earth and on TV later rather than real time. Regarding Skylab, Dwight told us about having a rescue vehicle available and he responded to questions about solar activity that played a role in Skylab's early return to Earth. Dwight was asked several questions about the ISS and our current program with listeners wanting to know was carried forward to the current programs & what evolved from those of the past. Regarding Shuttle, he talked about a noticeable attitude shift within NASA around risk averseness & other issues. We also talked about the CD that comes with the book as it has unique videos of the missions on it. Please post your comments/questions to TSS blog. You can reach Dwight through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.
