John Batchelor and I welcomed back Bill Harwood of CBS Space News to talk about the upcoming Perseverance landing on Mars scheduled for Feb. 18. Bill described the suspenseful landing, compared the new mission, Mars 2020, to the Curiosity mission including the landing and the cost of Curiosity, plus he talked about the special instrumentation on Perseverance for flying in the thin Martian atmosphere. Bill described the initial steps being taken for a Mars sample return in the future. He spoke about the microphones to hear the sounds of Mars and more. We also talked about the communication delay for the signal back to Earth, the time gap of about 11 minutes until we find out if the rover landed OK on Mars, plus alternative methods of getting the signal back from Mars to confirm the landing. Bill had even more to share with us during this one segment Hotel Mars program.
