We welcomed back to The Space Show both Dr. Alan Stern and Bas Lansdorp to talk about the Mars One & Uwingu Mars crater naming project partnership. Dr. Stern began the discussion in this 1 hour 33 minute program. Please note that both guests used cell phones and Bas was in Holland so we do have phone line noise and static throughout the discussion. Alan provided us with a brief history of Uwingu and then talked about having acquired the Mars crater database which forms the basis for the Uwingu Mars crater naming project. Our guest explained the project and how each of us can participate, as well as why we should name a crater. Dr. Stern then introduce our mystery guest, Bas Lansdorp, CEO of Mars One, as both Uwingu & Mars One are partnering in the crater naming project. Briefly, Uwingu will make a digital map of all the Martian named craters and Mars One will carry that map with them on their 2018 Phoenix like robotic mission which is an important mission leading up to their human missions. Bas did explain why the 2018 mission is so important to the overall Mars One plan. After this discussion, we fielded lots of listener email questions asking Bas about all aspects of the human mission from spaceflight safety to human factors, to launch vehicles, radiation, microgravity, all of the above and more. Alan also received numerous email questions seeking to clarify parts of the Uwingu project. There were lots of fun topics but this was really taken to the extreme when Bas mentioned the probability of crews eating insects. This set off a "bug storm" with listeners wanting to know the types of insects to be eaten, why, and lots of other things. Many around the world do eat insects but this seemed to strike some nerves among listeners. In the second segment, Alan and Bas talked about the joint press release to be issued Monday morning, March 3, 2014 describing the partnership & the project. You can see the press release on the two websites, www.uwingu.com and www.mars-one.com. We inquired about Mars One communications back to Earth, asked about the DSN and learned that Mars One might build their own ground stations for their own communications network. We talked about the profile of the ideal crew member, the command structure for the crews, radiation, microgravity, regulation, and more. Other topics discussed during this show included Mars One extracting water from the Martian soil, equipment/hab backup and redundancy, the possibility of Earth-return, possible impact on HSF & Mars with a mission failure or death, Mars spacecraft simulation, and much more. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dr. Stern and Bas Lansdorp through their websites or me.
