This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed the return to the program of both Richard Easton and Eric Frazier to update us on GPS here in the states and internationally. Make sure you read their book, "GPS Declassified" which is available from Amazon. If you use the Amazon Space Show/OGLF portal, Amazon will contribute 5% of the purchase price to The Space Show. Instructions are in all archived summaries and program blog posts. Visit their website, www.gpsdeclassified.com. During the first segment of our 1 hour 40 minute program, our guests updated us with new GPS developments, new generation GPS satellites, plus information about delays in bringing online new GPS operating systems including the new OCX system. Listeners asked our guests questions about how safe and secure our GPS system is from hackers, cyber attacks and even ASAT devices. Listeners also asked about the Russian GLONASS system as well as the European Galileo system. Marshall called in to talk about Differential GPS. BJohn inquired about GPS improvements so it would work inside and then the subject of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) came up. Listeners wanted to know just how vulnerable GPS might be to an EMP attack. John in Florida inquired about extending GPS throughout the solar system, then as the segment was ending, questions came up about a lunar GPS system. In the second segment, John from Ft. Worth called in to challenge some of the thinking about the risks posed by an EMP. John brought up some interesting points so don't miss this good discussion. Later, as a result of another BJohn question, we learned that not only are the GPS satellites used for navigation, but they have been used for nuclear detection and were why we could enter into treaties under the assumption of "trust but verify." Also in this segment, Mars came up as did a return to the Moon suggestion by our guests. Near the end, I asked about responsive space ideas and GPS. Here we learned that the idea was to have additional GPS satellites already in orbit that could be activated rather than having to quickly launch a replacement satellite. Both our guests provided us with closing comments and "pearls of wisdom." Post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Richard or Eric through me or the website.
