The Space Foundation Conference

Broadcast 1095 (Special Edition)

Guest: Dr. Jeff Bell. Topics: Apollo 8, Soviet L1 Zond, Obama space policy, SSP, Ares 1 & V, economics, Martian methane, NASA science missions, human spaceflight. Dr. Jeff Bell began the discussion today by referring back to an end of the year Space Show program which addressed Apollo 8 and a recent article written by Miles O'Brien on the same subject which ignored the rush for Apollo 8 because the Soviets were planning their own lunar flyby mission with the L1 which was more commonly referred to as the Zond spacecraft. You will want to hear what Dr.

Broadcast 1060 (Special Edition)

Guest: Jerry Carr was the guest for this Space Show program. The basis for our discussion was his biography published by Apogee, "Around The World in 84 Days: The Authorized Biography of Skylab Astronaut Jerry Carr." The author for this authorized biography was David Shayler. Naturally, much of our discussion focused on Skylab and his mission, Skylab 4. One of the early discussion topics was the Skylab 4 workload strike which has become notorious. Jerry explained it in detail and how it got blown out of proportion by a journalist. You will definitely want to hear this discussion.

Broadcast 913 (Special Edition)

Guest: Dr. Michael Neufeld was the guest for this Easter Sunday Space Show program. Dr. Neufeld is the chair of the Space History Division of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and author of the biography, "Von Braun: Dreamer of Space/Engineer of War." As today's program is on what would have been the 96th birthday of Von Braun, having a discussion on his life was most appropriate. We discussed Von Braun's Nazi past and Dr.Neufeld was clearing up myths and rumors, providing us with factual history regarding Von Braun.

Broadcast 549 (Special Edition)

Dr. Harrison Schmitt was the guest for this program to discuss his new boo, "Return To The Moon," and Lunar He3 and fusion for our future energy usage. Dr. Schmitt spent two hours with us outlining the importance of going back to the Moon for commercial purposes and the exploitation of lunar resources, specifically He3 combined with fusion here on Earth. To carry out this program, we need fusion so a good portion of the show was spent discussing fusion, the different types, the status and progress of each time.

Broadcast 536 (Special Edition)

Joel Powell was the guest for this Space Show program. As the focus was on his book about the history of Cape Canaveral, "Go For Launch: An Illustrated History of Cape Canaveral" published by Apogee, we began with a brief history of the Cape. For history buffs, you will certainly enjoy this program as Joel takes us through the history with military rockets, test rockets, commercial efforts and NASA launches over the 56 year history of this rocket center.

Broadcast 447 (Special Edition)

Alan Lawrie, author of "Saturn," was the guest for this special Space show program. We began the interview by asking Mr. Lawrie why he had an interest in the Saturn V rocket. For many of us, the answer does not come as a surprise given our having grown up in the Saturn V space era. Mr. Lawrie then took us through many of the Saturn V components, manufacturing processes, transportation to Florida, safety, quality control, redundancy, etc. We talked about lessons learned for the modern day rockets, suborbital space tourism, and more.
