We welcomed both Dr. Bobrick and Mr. Martire to the program to discuss their recent paper, "Introducing Physical Warp Drives." There is a link to the paper on our blog. Our discussion started with a brief history and timeline of warp drive research going back to the school paper written by now Dr. Miguel Alcubierre, a paper which went viral and truly kicked off warp drive excitement and research. Note that our guests frequently mentioned the physics think tank, In addition, our guests mentioned other Applied Physics researchers working on warp drive papers and research soon to be published. They also discussed challenges with mainstream science and the warp drive topic along with peer review issues though they said that was getting better. Toward the end they mentioned a scientific paper on warp drives that was published in the journal Nature.
Early in the discussion, our guests talked about traveling inside a type of bubble even at partial light speeds. They suggested that travel inside the shell would be the faster speed. Don't miss this part of our discussion as it was a suggested solution for most of the program's discussion. Our guests also talked about the shell being self-propelled by a type of pinching effect. They described an electro physical process which would probably be considerably more efficient than nuclear, even including fusion.
Both guests were asked for commercial timelines with the question from Roger suggesting and even hoping for a 10-15 year timeline. Our guests said that was not even close to being feasible and that we were a long way from anything like a commercial warp drive. They talked about needing more math, all sorts of specialized research, they even mentioned needing Skunk Works like work. Both guests did expand on commercial warp drive technology so be sure to hear all of this part of our discussion.
Another listener asked about Tic Tac and the soon to released congressional report (it was actually released Friday afternoon). Both Alexey and Gianni did not want to talk about it. Alexey seemed more willing but both said it was off limits. While we did not talk about Tic Tac and technology, do listen to what they told me when I asked them why they did not want to talk about it. I think there was more to it than just not knowing enough or having enough information about it. After Tic Tac, Sharon sent in a question (with factual errors in it) regarding speeding up to get to an interstellar destination in a shorter amount of time. Listen to the suggestions made about this by our two guests. Your thoughts? Our blog is awaiting your commentary. Near the end of the program, Bill asked about risk and damage from interstellar matter or dust. Both guests confirmed the risk of this hazard but don't miss their full response to this question.
