We welcomed Dr. Madhu Thangavelu back to the show to discuss his USC Design Studio class, the Artemis student mission, the spring seminar and more. We did a one segment 69 minute program starting off by talking about the NSS ISDC 2020 event in Frisco, TX the end of May (see https://isdc2020.nss.org). Madhu is co-chairing the Moon Track which he talked about but more on ISDC later in our discussion.
Madhu spent considerable time on the end of the 2019 academic year project with his students, The Maximum Impact Moon Mission. Check it out for 2019 at https://sites.google.com/a/usc.edu/aste527/home where you can see all the student projects from past years. Additional topics included SLS, LEO opportunities, cislunar development and later, a bit on Mars. In addition, I asked our guest if his students were actually interested in returning to the Moon. Don't miss the response provided by our guest. You might want to comment on it by posting on our blog.
Our guest was asked about interacting with NASA and the workshop. Madhu had some interesting things to say about that from the perspective that his class was and is about originality and creativity. Don't miss what he said about NASA and his design studio.
Returning to ISDC, Sally asked about submitting an abstract for the conference. Madhu provided instructions but if you go to the ISDC website, you will clearly see a link for abstract submission. In talking about ISDC, the program Seasteading came up with the Seasteading Institute (www.seasteading.org). Madhu had much to say on this subject and the relevance of the oceans to space settlement. Don't miss it. This discussion prompted a call from Ft. Worth John to bring up the old sci-fi under the sea TV show, "Voyage to Bottom of the Sea," wanting to know about parallels with space settlement today. Madhu then talked about using container ships off the coast for housing for the homeless. He also talked about that as a possibility of a model for space settlement. Our guest was asked about ISDC and the corona virus. He said they were watching things closely but the conference was still fairly far out so there was time to make decisions and of course we all hope the conference goes forward. As we were ending, a listener wanted to know if he really thought Artemis would happen and we would return to the Moon this time as currently planned. Don't miss Madhu's reply. Election year politics came up and then we closed with tributes to Freeman Dyson.
