We welcomed Dr. Jim Logan back to the show for a two segment two hour twelve minute discussion.  Note that during the break between the first and second segment I read our sponsor messages.  Please listen to them because we would not be doing this program without our sponsors.  By the way, we have sponsor openings for 2020. If you are interested in being a Space Show sponsor, please email me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Dr. Logan started the program by shouting out the 116th anniversary of the first heavier-than air controlled flight of the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.  In addition, Dr. Logan dedicated the program to the spirit of imagination and inspiration, plus and its power and influenced as evidenced by Jules Vern.  Dr. Logan then started talking about his theme for the program which was to focus on space settlement which NASA does not and will not do, to scrap the NASA human spaceflight program and to reconstitute it with a new separate National Space Development Authority. For the rest of the program, Jim explained his position, talked about why it was critically important to become a celestial civilization, and why his solution was the way forward given what he said about NASA based on his years working for them and fighting for space settlement.

In addition, Jim talked about the best place for human settlement in the solar systems. We talked about cloud cities at Venus, the Moon, and Mars, all of which he objected to though Venus got the higher marks.  The winner were the moons of Mars with Deimos being preferred over Phobos.  Jim spent considerable time explaining why Deimos was preferred, the use of artificial gravity inside of Deimos, latency communications times to Mars which were considerably faster than Earth and Moon time plus much more.

Another hot topic was propulsion.  Jim said we must advance with propulsion and said we had to start using nuclear thermal propulsion.  Many times during our discussion he explained why solar and electric propulsion would not cut it, including the fact that radiation was critical, especially in light of the new research by Dr. Charles Limoli which used low dose radiation over time with the rodents rather than front loading them with radiation as was done in the past.  You can download and read the paper by Dr. Limoli here:  https://www.eneuro.org/content/6/4/ENEURO.0094-19.2019.  The shorter travel time was required for deep space missions to Mars and other places to significantly shorten astronaut radiation exposure.

In the second segment I challenged Jim with a Sophies Choice like comment and question related to my own personal experience.  I probably did not do as good a job as I wanted in explaining why I was challenging Jim this way so I will attempt to clarify it here. Also, to be clear, the example I cited was for illustration purposes only thought some of the facts I used in the example were real.  I wanted to make the point that millions of people who may want to be on board with a program like Jim was describing, to become a solar system or even a celestial civilization, are faced with significant present day problems, some of which may be life threatening, It is very hard for them to see tax dollars go to something that may unfold hundreds or thousands of years from now when they need help today.  It is my opinion that we need to make a compelling case for what Jim talked about, especially with federal dollars being used for the space project.  Frankly, I don't think we are making that case.  I also believe we have a responsibility to do these types of federal spending projects in the most efficient and cost benefit way possible, keeping in mind that federal dollars being spent on what we want means that those same federal dollars won't be spent on something someone else deems very important, maybe even life saving for their family or themselves.  I wanted to stress that we needed to make a very compelling case for something like Jim proposed while at the same time needing to be super aware of other's needs, often lifesaving needs.  We should be extremely responsible with how we spend the dollars and carry out the programs. I think we can do and must do a better job all around.

There was much more to this program than what I am including in this summary.  I suggest you listen to all of it and post comments on the blog.  I will be sure Jim sees all the comments but it will be up to him if he wants to comment or reply.  Some of what Jim talked about and proposed was highly controversial but the idea of space settlement and becoming a celestial civilization is what many of us want for our future and it is part of what The Space Show focuses on with our space educational goals.  I know this brief summary does not hit all the high spots of our discussion but I will leave them for you to discover and consider when listening to our discussion, the calls and emails.

Please post all comments/questions on TSS blog for this show.  You can reach Dr. Logan through me at my Space Show email address.
