We welcomed both Aggie Kobrin and Rod Pyle back to the show to discuss the NSS, their newly revised award winning magazine Ad Astra and much more. During our 94 minute one segment program, Aggie started us out by describing the changes made over the past few years to upgrade the NSS quarterly publication Ad Astra. She talked about their new cover which really is amazing, photos and illustrations, including some by artist James Vaughan (he called later in the show), and of course the content. Rod joined in the discussion talking about the writers and the stories. It was worth noting that Ad Astra was not designed to be a technical journal. It is a general type issue with a tech edge that tells an important and engaging story. Telling the engaging story was a repeated theme throughout our program.
Dave in Los Angeles was our first caller. He wanted to talk about the old timer first generation space folks who made the space program fading the scene and what was being done to preserve actual space history. He had much to say about history books and films plus artistic license as compared to what really happened given a specific historical space event. In response to Dave, we talked about oral histories, specific history books and the film industry taking artistic license but not actually recording or saving the real story. Both Aggie and Rod had much to say as did I so don't miss this important discussion which proved to be a trend setter for our program.
Tony was another caller. Tony was a writer or columnist for Ad Astra. He also had much to say on the history subject. While talking with Tony, I read an email by Ben from Tucson wanting to know if the guests or Tony had seen a problem with revisionist space history. The short answer was no but this did lead to talking about the choice of writing with historical accuracy that might prove boring as compared to writing to inspire. Our guests and callers seemed to prefer inspiration over detail but listen to what they said and let us know your thoughts on this by posting comments on our blog.
Martin was our next caller who spent time talking with Rod about our space program, history, his observations, and the Apollo era. The two talked about indifference to our program and the need for inspiration but noted the complete opposite elsewhere using Japan as an example. Note that at the top of the hour Aggie left the conversation so for the final half hour, Rod was our only guest.
Our last caller was artist illustrator James Vaughan. We talked about his approach to space art and illustrating plus his background which included photo journalism. He talked about being inspired and motivated by space growing up in the 50's and the 60's. This was an interesting discussion so don't miss it.
