We welcomed both Aggie Kobrin and Dave Dressler for this special Thursday evening program focused on ISDC 2018. We started our one segment 62 minute with Dave introducing us to this year's program including featuring Tom Mueller who is the key SpaceX rocket scientist behind the Merlin and Raptor engines. Also, Jeff Bezos as a special Friday dinner speaker. Aggie and Dave talked about other key features of this year's ISDC event. They told us about the special SSP program on Wednesday before the official start of ISDC but also later in the actual conference. In addition, they brought our attention to the Thursday program "Living in Space" with several doctors specializing in life support and the mitigation of human factor challenges for long duration spaceflight and settlement. For the balance of the ISDC event, the name of this sessions change to space settlement. Another key feature we learned about was the program with the head of the NASA Advanced Concepts (NIAC) on Sunday.
Several logistical questions were asked by email listeners. For example, we learned that there are still hotel rooms available at the main hotel, the Sheraton Gateway near LAX. In addition, a backup hotel is nearby, the Embassy Suites. Registration fees were discussed as well as the special reservations needed for dinner and special events. There will be a silent auction over two days at this year's ISDC. Don't miss learning about many of the items that will be auctioned off as both Aggie and Dave had much to say about the silent auction. You will also learn that much of the ISDC programming is focused at the general population level so there should be no concerns that the sessions and talks will be too technical for most attending. Space policy came up so our guests told us about a special policy panel with Representative Dana Rohrabacher on Saturday morning. In addition, USC professor Greg Autry will also be presenting a policy panel with Peter Garretson regarding a possible space corps. Much was said about the Moon. There will be special program through the newly formed Moon Village Association regarding settlement on the Moon. The ESA Moon Village was discussed and there will be substantial programming on that project. Listeners wanted to know about Mars programming at ISDC so be assured there will be sufficient Mars programming. In fact our guests suggested that both the discussions about the Moon and Mars were evenly balanced in this ISDC. While there were a few other topics discussed before the end of our program, listener Cathy sent in a note asking about the ISDC history. Dave provided us with a brief but composite overview of both NSS and ISDC history. He said this year was the 37th ISDC. Prior to the show ending, Dave briefly talked about the student programming and participation available in this year's ISDC.
