John Batchelor and I welcomed Bob Zimmerman to this Hotel Mars double segment to discuss Bob's recent published paper, "Capitalism In Space: Private Enterprise and Competition Reshape The Global Aerospace Launch Industry."  Please note that the audio issue at the beginning of the program was on the Batchelor recording. Bob talked about private enterprise and commercial space, comparing its accomplishments to those of NASA and the pubic space program.  Bob talked about comparing rockets SLS with Orion to what is being done by the private launch companies, specifically SpaceX and Blue Origin with a focus toward human spaceflight.  In response to questions from John wanting to know if the privates could compete China regarding going to the Moon.  Bob suggested that it was only with the privates would there be any chance of competition or returning to the Moon.  He also said that over time the Chinese government program would start to crumble.

In the second part, Bob talked about the foes of capitalism in space of which he said there were many and that they were powerful.  He mentioned some companies and their projects.  We then said that for private industry aspirations and goals to be successful in the space community, their specific rocket and other projects needed to be successful.  Near the end of the segment, John asked why Bob included a reference to the Homestead Act from the late 1800's.  Bob explained that reference and suggested that nations were looking for ways to ensure commercial space given the challenges posed by Article 6 of the Outer Space Treaty.  Don't miss what he said about this as the program ended.

Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog for this program.  You can reach John or Bob through me. Bob can also be reached through his website, www.behindtheblack.com.
