John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Joel Green regarding the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). You can find out more about the JWST at www.webbtelescope.org. Dr. Green talked about the 2018 launch for the JWST on an Arianne 5 rocket. We also discussed the steps the telescope was now going through and would be going through up until launch to make sure it was ready with all systems working. In response to our questions, Dr. Green talked about the JWST capabilities, being able to view the first starlight (he explained that) and going further back in time than ever before. John asked our guest about the delays. As you will hear, inventing the new and varied technologies needed for JWST took time and money. Dr. Green focused in on the telescope mirror which is very unusual in design and the largest ever telescope mirror. Other topics included the other instruments on board the telescope, viewing in infrared and what is then done with the photos for us to see the images.
