We welcomed back Dr. Sandra (Sandy) Magnus to the program to discuss the upcoming AIAA Space 2016 Conference in Long Beach, Ca. for the week of Sept. 13, 2016.  Follow along with and get more information at www.aiaa-space.org.  For the first part of our 64 minute discussion, Dr. Magnus hit the highlights of Space 2016 including the Plenary and Keynote speakers and panels.  We also talked about the technical meetings and presentations, some of the featured speakers and other special programs.  Also mentioned was the livestreaming of select events so check the website for this information.  Our guest also talked about the New Space part of the community, commercial space and the programming focused on going to Mars.  The student reception was highlighted and stressed as being a very important part of the programming.  Our guest then described a special game to be played at the student reception.  Other items of interest discussed included the Exhibit Hall, Forum 360 programming, obtaining a copy of the conference proceedings and hotel/registration information plus the AIAA app for smartphones once registration is completed.

Next, we turned our attention the May 27, 2016 AWST issue with an Op-Ed by Dr. Magnus titled "Help Commercial Space And Go To Mars---How NASA Can Do Both."  You can see this article at http://aviationweek.com/space/opinion-help-commercial-space-and-go-mars-how-nasa-can-do-both. You may need AWST online access to read this article.  In her article, Dr. Magnus talked about the transitioning space industry and the emergence of a strong, new type of commercial space industry in its early development stages.  She talked about using strategic thinking & planning on the part of NASA and the government to plan on dual use with lunar exploration & development, cislunar development, dual use equipment and hardware development, the testing of hardware and systems in the cislunar and lunar environments, all designed to support the eventual Mars mission.  She had much to say about the role of the commercial sector which she preferred to refer to as the private sector, plus she talked about international participation.  Her visionary ideas would help make the emerging New Space and commercial industry self-sufficient with commercial customers, not just having NASA as a customer.  She repeated that the government needs to be more strategic.

We talked about how best to implement her ideas.  As she said, this would be a challenge so don't miss her comments on this subject.  We talked about the need for all the participants to think strategic and the need to engage all of the stakeholders.  Several listeners asked questions but Jerry from Florida sent in several emails to ask about live tweeting from the various programs and technical sessions, plus he had much to say about our discussion on commercial space delays and cost overruns, looking at Congress for most of the problems.  There were interesting discussions so don't miss what Dr. Magnus had to say about these issues.  In fact, Gerry's last question on the delays brought our program to a close.

Please post your comments/questions in the comments section of this archived program on TSS website.  You can reach Dr. Magnus through me or better yet, say hello to her at Space 2016!
