Welcome to our Tuesday evening Open Lines show.  During the first segment of the1 hour 41 minute program, Dan Adamo was with us regarding his analysis of SpaceX plans for going to Mars and landing a Red Dragon with scientific instruments.  Dan was referring to a recent Washington Post interview with Elon Musk.  You can see the link to the WaPo article and Dan's analysis in the comments section for this program.  Dan elaborated on his analysis for us, we talked about EDL, Mars aerobraking, the Red Dragon, Draco thrusters, and later human flights to Mars.  Listeners asked Dan several questions including one in which he was asked if he would have proposed such a mission were he still with NASA.  Dan had much to say about this as an exploratory mission. He said he could get behind it 100%.  Don't miss all of what he said about this.  Marshall called him to ask about lava tubes plus the potential for lava tubes to be on the Martian moons.  Listener Jack asked Dan about his Aquarius project with his preference for Deimos or Phobos over going to the surface of Mars.  Dan summarized his preference for Deimos and telerobotics to the surface of Mars.  Again, don't miss all of what he said about this.

Before the segment ended, I asked Dan about the asteroid found to be orbiting Earth, HO3. Actually it orbits the sun but appears to be in orbit around Earth.  Dan had some interesting things to say about it.  He will be the featured guest on Hotel Mars this week talking about it, and then he explained how the asteroid got its name designation.

In the second segment, Scott sent in an email from Australia with questions about SpaceX and the other businesses owned and controlled by Elon Musk.  I made an attempt to respond to Scott's multiple questions but as I said, I really don't know the answers to what Scott was asking. If any of you can share some information with Scott, please do so on the blog.

Jonathan from Boston called in as he is doing a crowdfunding program to test an EmDrive in space.  His project was mentioned by the Friday Space Show guest, Dr. Mike McCulloch.  Jonathan called to tell us about his project.  It appears he will be building a 3U cubesat to go to the ISS with NanoRacks and launched from there.  Check out his website for the project at www.buildanemdrive.org.  Jonathan is also interested in volunteers who may be interested in his project.  If you are interested, you can email him at jcard@buildanemdrive.org.

Our next caller was Dr. Doug who wanted to inquire about a space settlement and were children required for a settlement to exist.  Doug and I discussed this for several minutes, plus Doug discussed who he thought might be interested and financially able to move to Mars.  Since this is not something I see as happening anytime soon, nor do I see the purpose in wanting to live permanently on Mars, I told Doug I had a hard time even seriously talking about the subject but Doug suggested categories of individuals that may want to do this when it becomes possible.  I think its interesting to discuss these topics.  Tell us what you think by posting your comments on the blog regarding Doug's questions and ideas on those that may want to live on Mars one day in the future.  Also, are children required for a sustainable space settlement?  I said no but there would have to be a steady flow of a replacement population to help make the settlement viable.

During the remainder of the program, I went through the upcoming Space Show schedule through July.  Please post your comments/questions in the comments section for this archived show on TSS website.
