We welcomed Kelvin F. Long to the show to discuss both his new book, "Beyond the Boundary" and interstellar human spaceflight. During the first segment of our 1 hour 51 minute show, Mr. Long introduced his book which has been published on www.lulu.com by The Initiative for Interstellar Studies. We discussed the book and many of the contributing authors, then I asked our guest if we might have interstellar starships next century. Mr. Long said it was possible but also a very big problem so you do not want to miss this comprehensive discussion. During this segment, we addressed warp drive, worm holes, negative energy, and public sector responsibility for interstellar spaceflight. Kelvin provided us with some interesting history going back to the 1930s and the British Interplanetary Society (BIS) early work about rockets to the Moon. Later, nuclear propulsion came up in terms of both fission and fusion technology. As part of this discussion, Kelvin mentioned problems caused by the Outer Space Treaty. In addition, we discussed Project Dragonfly which is a laser sail competition, robotic payloads, Project Daedelus, and more. Listener Helen asked our guest about the plausibility of a hibernation ship and BJohn asked about gravitational forces of the Sun and interstellar travel. John called from Ft. Worth to seek a clarification about the Outer Space Treaty comments and to talk about NTG usage in space. In the second segment, Kelvin talked about Project Icarus and directed us to www.icarusinterstellar.org. We also talked about the growing interstellar community and some of those in different industry segments working for and supporting interstellar travel. Tim called to ask about the fission fragment rocket and Mach's thruster. BJohn asked about ET civilizations and the Fermi Paradox. Kelvin had much to say on this subject.
