Constance Adams, NASA consultant and space architect, was the guest on this edition of The Space Show. Ms. Adams began by discussing architecture and its relevance to space habitats and construction. We discussed the influence of space architecture on possible lunar and Mars settlements, and if the state of advancement and capabilities of this industry matched the timing of plausible lunar business ventures or the Bush policy initiative calling for a return to the Moon to stay. Ms. Adams discussed the benefits of space architecture and how they return positive advancements to society here on Earth, especially with having clean drinking water and other utilities we in the developed world take for granted. Ms. Adams explained some of the many architectural and engineering challenges of working with a closed system, especially one in micro-gravity. I asked Ms. Adams if there were parallels to terrestrial architecture in that architects often have their work and designs influenced by others. Thus, I asked if it was possible for a space architectural design to be influenced by the work of terrestrial architects in similar fashion to what happens on Earth, and if so, how would those influences show up. Ms. Adams talked about TransHab and other projects, and she shared with us her best thoughts on how space architecture can be used to facilitate our becoming space-faring and getting to Mars and beyond. This is the first Space Show that has focused on space architecture. I am certain there will be more to follow given the interesting discussion provided by Constance Adams.
