The Space Foundation Conference

Tim Dooley's interest in 19th century science fiction goes back to the late 50's when he first saw the movie "The Fabulous World of Jules Verne". During the 70's and 80's, he illustrated fantasy machines that included airships, land steamers, flying machines, submarine steamships, planetary and interstellar spacecraft. In 1986 these drawings created an opportunity to work in the aerospace industry. He is now a Senior Designer at Meggitt Sensing Systems. In 1994 his drawings caught the attention of the woman who later became his wife. In 1997, one of his airship drawings was published in the Orange County Register's Focus on Science page. In 2001, Lionel Trains produced an Aquarium Building accessory that was based on Tim's original concept design sketch. That sketch was published in the June 2001 addition of "O Gauge Railroading" magazine. In 2003 he started building scratch built models of his own design for a Victorian space-age room in his home. One of them is a wall hanging cutaway of an interplanetary spacecraft that includes a space-drive engine. At the urging of friends, Tim is now working on a book that explains these models in detail and the stories behind them. It will also include approximately two hundred of his original illustrations with commentary.

While this program was in three segments, this description will not be by segment as the majority of our topics crossed segment lines. Tim makes models of space and space related vehicles mentioned in stories by Jules Verne. He takes liberty with his designs, often bringing in some additional aspects not specifically part of the Verne story line or Victorian period.
