The Space Foundation Conference

Rusty Schweickart is the current Chairman of the B612 Foundation which has as its goal to significantly alter the orbit of an asteroid in a controlled manner by the year 2015. Mr. Schweickart is also well known as an astronaut having joined NASA as one of 14 astronauts in October 1963, the third group of astronauts selected. He was the lunar module pilot for Apollo 9 from March 3-13, 1969, logging 241 hours in space. This was the third manned flight for Apollo and the first manned flight for the lunar module. Rusty did a 46 minute EVA to test the portable backpack used on the lunar surface. He was also the backup commander for the first Skylab mission in the spring of 1973. After Skylab, he went to NASA HQ in Washington, DC as Director of User Affairs in the Office of Applications where he was responsible for transferring NASA technology to the outside world. In the time between NASA and his chairmanship of the B612 Foundation, Mr. Schweickart has been associated with various technologies as President and CEO of Aloha Networks and the Executive Vice-President of CTA Commercial Systems, Inc. and Director of Low Earth Orbit Systems. Rusty Schweickart and Dr. Tom Jones were the guests for this Space Show program to discuss the Chabot Space & Science Center program with the Association of Space Explorers (ASE) to support eliminating the global NEO threat. ASE is working with the United Nations to address this threat and both Rusty and Tom are part of the effort and the Chabot benefit program. During this discussion, both Rusty and Tom went into detail about the NEO threat as well as the characteristics of different kinds of NEOs.

Rusty Schweickart returned to The Space Show to update us on developments with near Earth asteroids and Earth's protection. Rusty outlines the steps being taken to get international decision making in place and to put into motion a gravity tug test project. Rusty Schweickart was the guest for this Space Show program. We began the discussion looking back at history and talking to Rusty about his astronaut and NASA experiences. In response to a question, he related to us that his EVA was the most memorable of his time spent in space. We talked at length about his EVA experience and what it was like to be outside the vehicle orbiting Earth. Rusty was also asked about ordinary people going to space as tourists given the rigors of his physical and mental astronaut training.
