The Space Foundation Conference

Piers Bizony has written about space exploration and cosmology for a wide variety of magazines in the UK and the US. "2001: Filming the Future," his award-winning book on the making of Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey," has become a standard reference work for the movie's many fans around the world. In 1997, "The Rivers of Mars," his critically acclaimed analysis of the life on Mars debate, was short listed for the NASA/Eugene M. Emme Award for Astronautical Writing, while "Island in the Sky" investigated the politics of the International Space Station. "Starman," produced as a book and a BBC film in partnership with TV producer Jamie Doran, told the story of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin's life for the first time; and "Invisible Worlds" (Weidenfeld & Nicholson) explored the strange borderland where 21st Century science meets art. Bizony also helped create the Millennium Fund bid for the@Bristol multimedia complex in the UK, and was creative consultant for the Cosmic Voyage planetarium at the Futuroscope park in Poitiers, France. His latest book, "The Man Who Ran The Moon" (due for publication this June), tells the story of James E. Webb, the brilliant yet controversial administrator who led NASA as it reached for the moon. Bizony is currently completing "Space 50," a major illustrated book for world-wide publishers Harper Collins, in association with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

Broadcast 509 (Special Edition)

Piers Bizony was the special guest for this Space Show program. Mr. Bizony, joining us from the UK, is author of the new book, "The Man Who Ran The Moon: James E. Webb, NASA, And The Secret History Of Project Apollo." We entertained an in-depth discussion about Mr. Webb, the early days of NASA, his leadership, NASA after James Webb, and the Apollo program. We also discussed NASA leadership today, the similarities with the original Apollo program, a return to a sort of Apollo program for our return to the Moon, the Viet Nam war and the Iraqi war.
