Joan Horvath and Rich "Whosawhatsis" Cameron are the co-founders of Nonscriptum LLC. Nonscriptum is a consulting and training partnership focused on 3D printing and open-source technologies. Since 2015, Joan and Rich have collaborated on eight books  (most recently “MAKE: Geometry“) and many LinkedIn Learning courses.  They also have taught many educators how to get started with 3D printing and use the technology effectively in their classrooms. In addition to her work with Rich, Joan also has an appointment as Core Adjunct faculty for National University’s College of Letters and Sciences. She has taught at the university level in a variety of institutions, both in Southern California and online. Before she and Rich started Nonscriptum, she held a variety of entrepreneurial positions, including VP of Business Development at a Kickstarter-funded 3D-printer company. Joan started her career with 16 years at the NASA/Caltech Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where she worked in programs including the technology transfer office, the Magellan spacecraft to Venus, and the TOPEX/Poseidon oceanography spacecraft. Joan Horvath returned to The Space Show to discuss her new book, "Saturn: A New View." We started the discussion with a short review of the Personal Spaceflight Symposium and the X Prize Cup held last week in Las Cruces, NM. After returning from the first break, Joan talked with us about the book, the cooperation involved to put it together, the amazing photos used in it and the editing process to put the photos and book together. We then discussed the VSE, NASA, JPL, science funding and programming, science education in the United States and more.

Joan Horvath returned to The Space Show to discuss the state of space and science education in the United States. Current trends in science literacy impact aerospace in general and New Space in particular. In Kansas and in Pennsylvania, fights are ongoing in the courts to define whether theories with a basis in faith can be taught in a science classroom; polls show that less than half of adults understand the issues of scientific method at the root of the controversy.
