Dr. Mark J. Lewis, President of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and an AIAA Fellow, is the Willis Young Professor and Chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also the former Chief Scientist of the U.S. Air Force, serving as the chief scientific adviser to the Chief of Staff and Secretary of the Air Force and providing assessments on a wide range of scientific and technical issues affecting the Air Force mission. He is the author of more than 275 technical publications, adviser to more than 60 graduate students. Among his many honors, Dr. Lewis is a 2007 Aviation Week and Space Technology Lauriet, and has received the AIAA/IECEC Terrestrial Energy Lifetime Achievement Award, and Energy Systems Lifetime Achievement Award from AIAA, and a 2005 Department of Defense award for meritorious service. Dr. Lewis is also a ASME Associate Fellow. Dr. Lewis received his Sc. D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his research interests are in the fields of hypersonic aerodynamics, advanced propulsion, and engine-airframe interaction.
