Dr. Bleddyn Bowen

Dr Bleddyn E. Bowen is a Teaching Fellow in strategy, military history, and intelligence studies at the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University, Wales. He received his PhD in International Politics there in early 2016 (funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council), entitled ‘Spacepower and Space Warfare: The Continuation of Terran Politics by Other Means’. His PhD thesis attempts to create a spacepower theory to study and strategise for space warfare. His core research interests focus upon the application of military thought, strategic theory, and international security studies to outer space and the analysis of global military space activities. He has published in the journal Astropolitics: The International Journal of Space Politics and Policy on the political implications of space debris removal technologies, and elsewhere on the European Union’s space strategy, and the Welsh aerospace industry’s potential in a British and global space economy. In 2014 he was granted a Visiting Scholar position at the Space Policy Institute at the George Washington University as part of his doctoral research on space warfare. Dr Bowen’s prior education entailed a BScEcon in International Politics, an MScEcon in Strategic Studies, and an MScEcon in Security Studies. He has taught extensively on strategy, military history, intelligence and security studies at the Department of International Politics, Aberystwyth University; and the UK Defence Academy’s Joint Services Command and Staff College with King’s College London’s Defence Studies Department. Dr Bowen appears frequently on news items concerning warfare, space activity, and nuclear weapons on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, and S4C in the Welsh and English languages.
