We welcomed John Oehler back to the program to discuss his new book,"Papyrus: A Thriller," and some of the 1983 space technologies that contributed to the story. During the first segment of this 90 minute discussion, Mr. Oehler responded to a few of my general questions regarding ground penetrating radar (GPR), book contests, and self-publishing. Our guest then told us the story of writing this book, a project which was start and stop over many years. He also explained why the 1983 setting. We talked about Queen Tiye who was the mother of King Tutankhamen, the sun god focus, and how the Eritrean war of independence factored in to the story. Without giving too much away, very early on we saw the use of modern technology and space based technology contributing to the story as a secret message was accidentally discovered to be under a papyrus written by Queen Tiye in the Cairo Museum. John developed a very exciting way of getting the papyrus out of the museum to be scanned by high technology and from there the story goes back and forth from 1983 to the days of the 19th Dynasty and the focus on the sun god. Our guest told us enough of the story to get us excited to read the entire book and having read it, I can tell you it’s a "you can't put me down" type book to read. One of the questions I asked our guest was could the story have been told or even worked had there been no space technology, specifically remote sensing. John did not think it would have been written without that contribution. In the second segment, we talked more about the sun god religion and what happened after the 30 year duration of the focus on the sun god. I asked John about his next book, "Tepui," which takes place in Venezuela. Marshall called in to ask about the need for an author to actually have been to the ISS, the Moon, or Mars to write a good story just as John Oehler has been to the locations he writes about in his books. We spent a good amount of time discussing this subject from the artist and craft perspective. We even talked about the Mars Microphone idea and why that would be important for writing good stories about Mars. More was said about both GPR and LIDAR and how they could be used to write a story based on Martian analysis and findings using these tools on Mars.
