The Space Foundation Conference

Feedback: What did you think of this show?:

Guests:  Open Lines with Dr. David Livingston; Topics:  Multiple callers on many topics per the tags/key words. In addition, we had an at length discussion about the Prince William and BBC Earth Shot Prize program and naysayers to commercial and human spaceflight.  This was a 2.5 hour very broad discussion on many topics.

Welcome to our 2.5 hour multiple Open Line discussion show.  We had many callers on multiple and wide ranging topics.  Following the tags/key words is again a good guide for program topics.  Callers included Ft. Worth John on multiple topics including Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder and her short video on terraforming Mars. John also talked about a book (see his blog post) on the UAP topic.  John was followed by Tim calling about his checking into the SpaceNukes website we talked about on an earlier show.  This turned out to be about Kilopower which Tim addressed.

A larger topic appeared when the subject of William Shatner, having gone to space on Blue Origin, came back and indirectly spoke up SSP during an interview.  Gene from Pasadena called about the Shatner commentary while others sent in emails about it.  Listen to what was said. I did read the Shatner comments so post your thoughts as we would like to hear from you on this subject.  Gene said Shatner had clearly been talking with Bezos about this and then Gene talked about the recently published UK report on SSP that was a positive statement for the SSP potential.

Re email questions, note that Adrian was very active during this show on multiple topics, especially later in the program regarding the BBC- Prince William Earth Shot Prize discussion with Kim.  I read all of Adrian's emails on air.  Fremont John was the next caller on many topics. He lead with the fact that he observed that there was no mention at the Mars Society Conference regarding the need for figuring out the gravity RX for humans in space.  He then talked about a talk on the subject known as "Freedom Engineering" contrasting liberty and tyranny as suggested by Charles Cockell of the University of Edinburgh.  You can see his paper on the subject at www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0265964618301036?via%3Dihub.  John had much to say on this subject and I will likely follow it up for a Space Show program.  See the Laura Montgomery post on the subject mentioned by John at https://groundbasedspacematters.com/index.php/2021/06/22/freedom-engineering. This topic should be another opportunity for you to post on our blog.  John next brought up the idea of condos in orbit with Starship, then he talked about Kalpana Mini regarding an O'Neill space cylinder.

Kim called toward the end of the show. First, congratulations to Kim for being a finalist in the NSS Martine Rothblatt business plan competition.  We will be looking for Kim to "take it all home" when she presents at the special NSS Space Settlement meeting in Los Angeles in early November.  Next, Kim brought up the BBC Prince William/Royal Foundation Earth Shot Prize contest which supports innovation and science on Earth, not in space. In fact, Prince William and this program are a giant naysayer to space development efforts.  Many listeners commented by email and some called on the third line to talk with Kim about this.  It turned out to be a major part of our discussion for the day so I encourage you to stay with us for the extra long segment.  We would like your thoughts on this Earth Shot Prize program, possible ways to combat it or should we just ignore it as some listeners suggested.  By the way, the NY Times, WaPo, CNN and other media in the U.S. have been on top of the Earth Shot story, the first prize award and the fact that we should not be wasting money and resources with human tourist spaceflights funded by billionaires when their money is needed to solve Earth's problems.  TSS blog is waiting for your commentary.  Before the discussion with Kim ended, note what she said about online Chinese lunar imaging material in contrast to online NASA lunar imaging material.

Please post your comments/questions on our blog for this program.  If you want to contact any of our callers or those sending in emails, please let me know.
