We welcomed back Nick Nielsen to talk about a lunar civilization development in the context of human history and as a stepping stone to eventual interstellar development and flight.  Nick gave a terrific talk on this subject at the 2017 Starship Congress.  You can see his talk as I have it posted in the blog section for this archived show.  I encourage you to watch it.  I suggest you follow along with it during our 2 hour 6 minute discussion.  During the first segment of today's discussion, our guest first referenced the program with Dennis Wingo the day before pertaining to lunar civilization development.  Nick then referenced the structure of civilizations along with the infrastructure needed for such structure.  In this context, we talked needed infrastructure, sustainability, and machines vs. humans.  Nick talked about three categories and examples;

1.  The SpaceX Mars mission structure.  Here he also referenced the work of Dr. Zubrin, needed infrastructure and more.

2.  Generational starships.  He talked about early concepts of this by O'Neill and Von Braun in his Colliers articles.  He related this to very large scientific projects and talked about the need for much more infrastructure than ever before needed for projects.

3.  Small starships with advanced technology such as something like warp drive.  He referenced how we build submarines and more in this part of the discussion.

We spent much of the first segment on how we build and develop infrastructure.  Nick took us through many historical examples so don't miss this discussion.  Later we addressed central projects which were an important part of his Starship Congress presentation.  Central projects in the context of human history and development are important.  Nick mentioned Apollo being that type of project, also saying they were unifying by getting the people behind the project.  Nick talked about the Egyptian civilization as well, then about the opportunities that come from great central projects.  The subject of frontier development came up using the American frontier as a type of model for space development and as a topic for an upcoming Space Show program (during Kim's call).

We took a call from Kim in Mexico during the latter half of the first segment and much of what I summarized above came down in her call.  But Kim raised some very interesting points and had a terrific and long, comprehensive discussion with Nick which definitely clarified and added to tonight's discussion.  Do not miss what Kim had to say and shared with us all, especially about central projects, Apollo, and much more.  Also, she posted a great blog comment regarding Nick's Starship Congress talk so make sure you read her comment on the blog.

We opened the second segment with my reading of the second segment sponsors including Celestis.  I then asked our guest if space funerals were an indication of our society moving forward with space development, especially lunar development since Celestis has sent ashes to the Moon and plans on additional lunar missions.  I also asked Nick about references of the early folks on this planet indicating a desire to travel to the stars.  This was a great way to start of the second segment so don't miss these topics of discussion, Nick's thoughtful responses and listener questions as we moved the program forward.

John from Ft. Worth was our next caller to talk about the development of computer resources, computing, and technology and how all of this has changed our concept of the solar system.  He also pointed out that the early cost estimates for exploring and developing space and beyond were really underestimated and this too has changed both our pace and ability to develop space.  John and Nick had a great discussion which included AI, maintaining technological competitiveness and wondering if robots might do our space exploring instead of us.  In keeping with this discussion, I read a note from Ted in San Diego who asked Nick (John was still on the line) if the human exploration and settlement of space would be worthwhile if we ever proved we were absolutely alone in the universe.  This opened up an entirely different line of discussion with our guest with Nick putting forth several options to consider.  John participated with some thoughts too before he cleared the line.

As we were coming up on the end of the program, I reminded Nick that he had referenced the Wingo show from the night before.  I brought up the concluding comments from that program which dealt with all the naysayers predicting we were doomed and society was going lower than even Dante's seven stages of  hell.  That said,  Denis then pointed out that our role as space advocates was to take the space vision forward as it provided hope and was an answer to all the negativity going on today.  I asked Nick to put the naysayers and today's cultural problems and deterioration into historical context for us, plus I wanted his opinion on the idea of the space vision leading us to a better world,  so to speak.  Nick provided an excellent historical comparison going back in time to the Greek dark ages.  I  hope you listen to this concluding part of our show tonight.  Not only was it historically significant, it was informative and very much to the point of what I had asked Nick.  Even his thoughts on the space vision and going forward were realistic and not so Kumbaya oriented (by the way, I came very closer to putting Kumbaya on in the background of the Wingo show but I showed marvelous restraint.  The same restraint was exercised during these final seconds of this program).   Nick's concluding discussion  was an amazing way to end this particular program.
