John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Shuai Li from the University of Hawaii Geophysical Dept. to discuss his having found rust on the Moon and the probable cause for such rust. During this ten minute segment, Dr. Li discussed how and why they think the rust got on the Moon and why it is there. The hypothesis is that the Earth solar wind takes Earth's oxygen from the upper atmosphere and carries it in the Earth magnetotail to the Moon. When the Moon is full, it passes through our magnetotail and transfer to the lunar surface. Once at the moon, it mixes with lunar water around the poles and since there is iron on the Moon, rust comes about. Dr. Li explained this process to us, discussed the water at the south pole, described the Earth magnetotail and more. For sure we will hear more in the coming weeks and months from Dr. Li. A simple Google or similar search will turn up multiple scientific articles on this subject.
