During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Paul, Gordon, and I talked about the upcoming Chang'e 3 mission to land a lunar robotic probe on the Moon with a scheduled launch of Dec. 1, 2013. Dr. Spudis described the instrument package, the proposed science to be done, the payload capabilities of the launcher setting the stage for future Chinese lunar missions, and the absence of an American lunar program. Both John and Gordon expressed concern that the Chinese space program is part of their military and they asked several questions detailing their concern with China and a possible military space program. I agreed with Paul when he said the biggest concern he had was the fact that the U.S. was not in the game, abdicating leadership to the Chinese and others. We also talked about the power supply for the Chang'e 3 mission hardware and surviving the long and very cold lunar night using batteries.
