We welcomed Dr. Phil Metzger back to the program to discuss space and economic development on a very large scale.  During the first segment of our one hour 47 minute program, Dr. Metzger introduced us to his big vision view based on his paper, "Space Development and Space Science Together, an Historic Opportunity."  You can see the links to this paper on the blog for this show or simply visit https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1609/1609.00737.pdf and https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1612/1612.03238.pdf.   Our first segment discussion had Dr. Metzger taking us through his premise for space development furthering economic development here on Earth as well in space.  This is a very involved and detailed discussion that you will want to listen to carefully and with attention.  Phil answered many listener questions, talked about technology, what was needed for space, and most important, the need for a benevolent international coalition to lead these efforts.  You do not want to miss what Phil had to say on these and many listener questions and comments.

In the second segment, BJohn sent in some notes inquiring about ISRU development, the theories of Sir Roger Penrose and others.  Dr. Doug sent in a note asking why we need to concern ourselves with getting needing more resources from the solar system.  Don't miss how Phil responded to both of these questions.  Adrian sent in a note to enhance what Phil had been saying about bad actors taking the lead for space economic development.  Adrian and Phil exchanged comments about the storyline in "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Robert Heinlein.

Another listener asked Phil about the classic Moon vs. Mars debate.  Phil explained the importance and value of the Moon for more than just this debate.  You do not want to miss what he said in response to this question, including letting us know his support for the ESA idea of the Lunar Village.

James asked about business cases closing and more.  Phil responded talking about space mining, Luxembourg, Made in Space, 3D printing in space and more.  As we were approaching the end of the program, I inquired about development time lines, & property rights for mining.  Before our program ended, I asked Phil about economic geology and the turning point in his career that directed him to the type of visionary space development talked about today and represented by his papers and research.

Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog.  You can reach Dr. Metzger through the address on his papers or through me.
