Dr. George Ludwig will be discussing his new book, "Opening Space Research: Dreams, Technology, and Scientific Discovery," published by the AGU. George was the person who designed and built the actual cosmic ray experiment hardware that flew in this country's first satellite, Explorer 1, as an M.S. graduate student under Dr. James Van Allen. He flew an upgraded version of the hardware on Explorers II and III and, after earning his PhD at the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa), went on to a distinguished career at NASA and other government organizations
