Martin Schwab is completing his Ph.D. in international relations at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he has served as an academic mentor for student athletes. Mr. Schwab received his master’s degree in international security studies from the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh in 2002 and his bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of Dayton in 1995. From Honolulu he also teaches high school level world history through email for his alma mater Nightingale Montessori in Springfield, Ohio. Mr. Schwab is author of Homeplanet Defense: Strategic Thought for a World in Crisis (Infinity Publishing, 2005) and three chapters in the Aerospace Technology Working Group books Beyond Earth: The Future of Humans in Space (Apogee Space Books, 2006) and Living in Space: Cultural and Social Dynamics, Opportunities, and Challenges in Permanent Space Habitats (Lulu, 2008). www.atwg.org. In 2000 he served as interim chair of the Ohio Chapter of the Mars Society. In early 2003 Mr. Schwab worked as a research associate for the Future of Space program at the Eisenhower Institute in Washington, D.C. There he helped draft the first international Space Security Index with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Canada. From 2003-2004 Mr. Schwab served as founding director of the Homeplanet Defense Institute in McLean, Virginia and interim president of the Washington, D.C. chapters of both the World Future Society and Citizens for Global Solutions as well as serving on the board of directors for the Philosophical Society of Washington, “the oldest scientific society in Washington, founded 1871.” In 2006 he participated in the 2005 Space Security Survey/Index of international civil, commercial, policy and military space trends and key developments in 2005 for Project Ploughshares, Canadian Council of Churches. Mr. Schwab is expecting to receive his doctorate in December 2009 after which he would like to consult with governments and corporations and to teach as an adjunct professor.
